Ergash Karimov was born on October 26, 1934, in Tashkent. He graduated from the Tashkent Institute of Arts in 1958.

Although he gained great fame during the Soviet era, after the dissolution of the USSR, Ergash Karimov became unemployed. According to his friend Ali Hamroyev, Karimov spent the last years of his life in Tashkent earning a low salary. Ergash Karimov passed away on August 4, 2009, at the age of 74.

Ergash Karimov is not related to Islam Karimov.

Karimov worked at the Surxondaryo Theater from 1958 to 1959. From 1959, he was an assistant director at the television miniature theater of the "Yoshlik" television studio of the Uzbekistan State Television and Radio Company, becoming a director in 1965, and artistic director from 1997.

Karimov's art was steeped in sharp satire and an uplifting spirit, and he was known as a master of plastic and mimic movements. He sometimes performed several roles in a single play. Resourcefulness, exaggeration, naturalness in performance, and simplicity in a humorous tone form the basis of Karimov's work.

Karimov's most famous roles include: Matchmaker (Said Ahmad, "Oliq-soliq"), G'izg'izon (Alp Jamol, "G'izg'izon"), Tester-drinker (Said Ahmad, "Sinovchi-ichuvchi"), Director (Said Ahmad, "Lampashisha"), Muqimjon (Said Ahmad, "First Love"), Fan (Alp Jamol, "When the Cotton Picker Wins and Loses"), Student (E. Musayev, "H2O"), Qiyomov (Alp Jamol, "Scattered Feather"), Sottivoy (Alp Jamol, "I'm Writing"), Manager (Alp Jamol, "Inept Manager"), Koyilxo'jayev (Alp Jamol, "Snore"), TV reporter (Said Ahmad, "Girls' Brigade"), Old Man (Said Ahmad, "Old Man"), Husband (E. Usmanov, "Tell Your Dream to the Water"), Judge (E. Raimov, "Quyoshxon"), Father (E. Usmanov, "Goodbye"), and others.

The most famous film Karimov acted in is a collection of television miniatures titled "Uchrashuv", filmed in 1972. In this film, Karimov played the role of a simple student who could not explain the formula of water. The student says there is no atom in water and that it is used to make atomic bombs. Ergash Karimov also played the role of a light-fingered teacher in the film "Shum Bola".
